1964 Olivetti Studio 44 Serial # 501230 1964 Olivetti Studio 44 typewriter, Serial # 501230 Greg Mattesen's 1964 Olivetti Studio 44 typewriter. 2025-02-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1964 Olivetti Studio 44 Serial # 501230 Found locally in an antiques shop in April 2023. I never got excited about the looks of these, but the price was right and the machine was in nice shape with its original literature, so I took the plunge. I've been very impressed with the typing experience on this machine. It is a large, heavy portable, but the keystrokes are light and precise. Once I get into the groove I can type pretty fast on it. The case is funny: the white vinyl and brass-colored hardware call to mind the over-the-top styling of Liberace.

Compared to a regular-sized portable like a Smith-Corona 5-series, the Studio 44 is huge.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
