1963 Underwood Raphael Serial # E13-9228126 1963 Underwood Raphael typewriter, Serial # E13-9228126 Robert Clendaniel's 1963 Underwood Raphael typewriter. 2019-03-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Robert Clendaniel: 1963 Underwood Raphael Serial # E13-9228126 This brute was the workhorse of my family's business for over 30 years - from 1963 to the mid 1990's. He's still going strong, except for the solder on the 'A' and 'N' type slugs that just couldn't hold up to the mule-kick power of this machine. "Carbon copies? How many? Five? No problem, boss!" Turn this monster on and you might think there is a locomotive idling somewhere nearby. The low rumble of that electric motor always said "Open for business and there's work to be done!"

In 1963, the proportional spaced type style was very contemporary and garnered a LOT of compliments. It still looks great today, if you ask me. And of course, how cool is the blue color combined with the brutalist lines?

I hope one day I can get those slugs fixed!

I'm an architect by day and an incorrigible tinkerer by night. I prowl thrift stores, auctions, and antique shops looking for old mechanical things to fix up. My entry drugs were fountain pens and wind-up tin toys, but before long I had gone to the harder stuff - watches and clocks. Finally, I broke down and decided to try "just one" typewriter - a 1948 Royal KMM. I told myself I wouldn't do any more until I got rid of it, but didn't know you could get hooked so easily. Fourteen typewriters later, I still have the KMM, and am still looking for that next fix. I'm expecting an intervention from the family soon.
