Description:
The Secretarial is one serious typewriter but this one has not been cared for. It’s worth fixing, though, for its mill typeface, with the letters being all upper case in both shift positions and the distinct “1”, slashed zero, and the quirky “8” and “C”. See if you can find any images of telegrams showing those odd characters.
The back panel is removable without tools (though I’ll bet there’s a tool to make it easier to get it back on) so I wonder what had to be adjusted so frequently that this design was worth the cost.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Secretarial on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Secretarial By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
