1963 Royal Safari Serial # SA5501031 1963 Royal Safari typewriter, Serial # SA5501031 Andrew Hearn's 1963 Royal Safari typewriter. 2023-08-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Andrew Hearn: 1963 Royal Safari Serial # SA5501031 1963 Royal Safari Deluxe 'Nigel! s/N: SA 5501031
Dimensions:
Case 14&1/1” x 16&1/4” x 17&1/2” 17&1/2 lbs
Typewriter 12&1/4” x 14&3/8” x 5&1/2” 14&1/2 lbs
Features:
Left Backspace; Pica Font; dedicated 1&! key; Magic Margins; Custom Tabs; 9” carriage; No spacing, 1 click per line; 2 ribbon settings; no paper rest; No Paper bail; segment shift; removable ribbon cover; 3 line spacing options
Model History:
The Safari line of typewriters was introduced by royal to replace Futura line that itself had replaced the Royal Quiet Deluxe. This machine was made the year that the Safari was introduced in 1963. The model under—went a minor redesign in 1968 and was renamed the Saber. This model continued production till 1 981b when it was discontinued. The Safari name was brought back in 1985, but on a rebranded Nakajima typewriter.
Typing Feel:
The first of the key stroke is light until it hits a soft wall. From there required effort increase sightly with no noticeable break. Though this machine lacks the more solid feel of a more high-end typewriter. While an Olympia SM—9, it is still a pleasant machine to type on. The effort that the keys require is relatively light and the touch control makes little difference in the feel.
Where I found It:
I found this typewriter at Big Valley Antiques towards the end of 2021. At the time I paid it little mind since I already had a machine with pica typeface and I was under impressed with the build quality compared to my 6 series Smith—Corona. After doing some research on the model, I became more interested in it, particularly the fact that it is able to type effectively without a paper bail. After some further thought, I decided to get this machine. If nothing else, its pica font and lack of a paper bail to get in the way makes it useful for addressing envelopes.
