1963 Olympia Splendid 33 Serial # 709943 1963 Olympia Splendid 33 typewriter, Serial # 709943 Gary Wann's 1963 Olympia Splendid 33 typewriter. 2018-10-26 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Gary Wann: 1963 Olympia Splendid 33 Serial # 709943 This was the machine that started me off collecting a few months ago. I've had an Imperial 58 for ever, but it was gathering dust as an ornament in my workroom. I spotted an Olympia Splendid 66 in a local antique shop, but it was in poor condition, although it did actually type OK, and it was too expensive for its condition.

Then the Splendid 33 appeared and I was tempted but didn't take the plunge. I watched both of these over a period of weeks until suddenly the 33 was reduced in price - that did it! I've looked at the 66 again as the price of that has dropped too, but not enough considering the work that would need to be done to make it presentable.

The Splendid 33 is a wonderful little machine. It feels really solid, but not heavy, and the keyboard is a delight to use. The typeface is larger than most of my other typewriters, 10 characters per inch rather than 12. It's in good to average condition considering its age. It's difficult to date it exactly from the database here, but I'm fairly sure it's a 1963 model.

Replacement rubber grommets of the correct size are difficult to find. These receive the ribbon cover studs and should be white not black. These were my third attempt, although you can find grommets that fit the typewriter holes, the hole in the grommet is then too big for the cover studs. I used heat-shrink tube around the studs to make then a better fit, but the cover is still slightly loose.

Retired Air Traffic Controller. Got my first typewriter from Santa when I was about 8 years old and woke my parents up at 3am as I just had to try it out when I woke up! Have had an old Imperial 58 in the family for longer than I can remember. A computer geek, but I just love the mechanics of typewriters and have started to collect a few more to keep the Imperial company!

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia Splendid 33 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia Splendid 33 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
