1963 Hermes Baby Serial # 5951027 1963 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 5951027 Jonathan Taylor's 1963 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2021-03-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Jonathan Taylor: 1963 Hermes Baby Serial # 5951027 Hermes Baby from 1963. This is one of my favourites. I later acquired a late 1960s Hermes 3000, but in my opinion the typing action on the Baby is much more pleasant to use for long typing sessions. I know many people don't like the return lever, but I don't mind it. I don't really see what the big deal is, it does the job fine.

When I found this machine, I happened to be looking on eBay at just the right time. I later found out the listing was only online for forty minutes before I bought it for an absolute song. The seller had it cleaned and serviced and the condition is pretty much mint condition, as is the case. The only thing wrong is the slightly funky smell, but it's not too distracting.

I am a typewriter collector based in Somerset, England. I started collecting in the of winter 2020, shortly before the first Covid-19 lockdown. I am self-employed and, like a lot of people during the pandemic, I found myself without work for a while; before adjusting to the so-called 'new normal'! One advantage of this period was that I could spend time getting to know the Adler Gabriele 25 that I bought. I soon found many other sellers online offering fully serviced machines for reasonable prices, such as Mike Beale's "Typewriter Store" on Etsy, Tom Lucas "The Typewriter Man" and George Blackman; as well as sellers on eBay, of course. Suffice it to say I got the bug for collecting thereafter.

Note: If anyone is wondering what the typewriter is in my profile picture, it is a custom finished Olympia SM4, which I bought online from a typewriter store here in the UK. The silver glitter finish was quite jaw-dropping (the photo does not do it justice) and apparently took the seller a long time to get right (the finish was not my request, I might add). However, the machine had several flaws, plus I really didn't like the 'qwertz' layout. I had to send it back for a refund - which is the only time I have returned a typewriter. I soon found my bottle green Olympia SM3, which is now my favourite - so there was a happy ending.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Baby on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Baby By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
