1963 Adler J3 Serial # 3316127 1963 Adler J3 typewriter, Serial # 3316127 Greg Mattesen's 1963 Adler J3 typewriter. 2025-11-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1963 Adler J3 Serial # 3316127 Purchased in October 2022. It was a bit dirty and had a hard platen. I also discovered that one of the ribbon drive gears had a broken pin (plastic) so the ribbon wasn't advancing in one direction. I fixed that by drilling a hole into the plastic gear and installing a metal roll pin. This is one of the nicest-feeling typewriters I've used: the carriage return is incredibly smooth. Despite the plastic body, the typewriter has a heavy, solid feel. My only real complaint is the carrying case: it is so fussy to get it to close.

Update: sold to another collector November 2025. I know I'm going to miss this one. It typed so well.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
