Description:
51 lbs for the price of getting it out of the basement. A good day of hunting!
Very clean except for the start of a mouse nest in the basket. It looks like maybe eating the ribbon did him in. Powers up on a very short test. Sticky keys/shift but no unusual noises.
A quick newspaper search shows a huge ad push in 1961 for the three model lineup of Raphael, Forum and Scriptor. Not sure where this serial number puts this one with so little twdb sources.
4.30.24 Service update. A fun project. The side covers are post, grommets, washers and e clips. Someone didn't put the rear two clips on either side back in place. I found a rubber washer amongst the mouse house. One metal washer was found when it jammed up the carriage shift mechanism, which I initially thought was a sticky button. Otherwise, it cleaned up easy and just needs four slugs aligned to be dialed in.
List was $385. What did an IBM C cloth ribbon list for?

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandparents had a No 5. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! A casual interest in typewriters started with a garage sale 3 bank simply because it said Underwood on it. Typewriters were found here and there , but I wasn't actively looking for them. The long dormant collecting tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved.
Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Scriptor on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Scriptor By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
