Description:
This machine has a nifty silver case and a cursive font. It needs a repair I might be unqualified to make--the carriage return sticks at halfway through a line of typing and sometimes before. I've fiddled with every knob and lever and am no closer to it fully working--about to take it to Ace Typewriter Repair in Portland, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful to hear them!
Update: I took this into Ace Typewriter; it needed a new escapement and several adjustments. It types beautifully now and all is in order, so I'm adding some pics and replacing the typing sample.

I started collecting typewriters in 1996 when my employer at an old newsstand in Kalamazoo, MI gave me her mother's Underwood Elliot Fisher Noiseless; I love these machines and learning how to repair and maintain them. The Noiseless was the medium for a zine I wrote through the nineties and into the oughts, and my nine-year-old daughter now types regularly.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes 3000 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes 3000 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
