Description:
This late 1961 Olympia SM7 was in fairly good shape but did need a fair amount of cleaning and attention. This is the one that needed the tabulator brake repair job that I posted here:

It’s turned out to be a very nice typer. Under the hood it looks VERY much like the SM4. But when I type on it, the feel is a little different, and so is the sound. Similar, clearly of the same Oly SM ilk, but just a slightly different experience to some degree. Again, a very nicely engineered machine with that German build quality. The type is 10 pitch, nice and big on the page, very clear and consistent.
I can say that I've observed that the Olympia platens seem to get VERY hard over time, and I seem to prefer using two sheets of paper to help dampen the sharp tone of the strike.

I've spent my life as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, appliances, cameras, audio gear, guitars, amplifiers, and pedal steel guitars. I was trained as a typist for 2 years back in the late 70's on IBM Selectric II's. At home I recall my mother having an Olympia SM3. More recently we got our daughter a typewriter for Christmas, and that somehow sparked my own personal interest in these fine and interesting machines. Now it's a habit that just won't quit. Daily searches on Craigslist, frequent trips to antique stores & malls, garage sales, etc. It's a fun and healthy addiction.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia SM7 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia SM7 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
