Description:
I bought this Consul 235 for chum change at a Salvation Army Thrift Store about a year ago. Consul of course being one of the numerous brand under which this typewriter and similar machines were sold such as Speedwriter, Norwood, Commodore, etc. The typewriter has corrosion on it's bottom plate as well as within the mechanism, which appears to be mainly superficial. Mechanically the typewriter works, although I would have to describe the machine as "tacky". Despite the fact that I have always had very pleasant experiences with Commodore, I must say that this typewriter came as a disappointment. Beside the fact that the feel of the keys is just below par, mechanically the machine is flimsy, and does not feel like it will hold up properly to heavy work. Oddly enough the machine does seem to have sufficient padding within the body, more than what is to be expected with a higher quality Japanese Brother. But otherwise the machine feels cheap, even though the body is made of metal. All in all, nothing to write home about.
