Description:
The infamous Cole Steel. This one was an eBay purchase a few days back, just arrived. Like many Cole Steel/ABCs, this one had an escapement problem, although it was minor and easily fixed. However, in fixing it I realized why these are so susceptible to escapement issues. They sit so low to the ground, without a bottom panel, that if one were to rest it on uneven ground you could be at risk of bending peices in the escapement. If you put it down hard enough, worse damage could occur. I have found that some parts in the escapement are so thin that they are pliable by hand - not a good thing if the bottom isn't protected!
Once I remedied its issues, I came to realize how pretty and clean my new typewriter was. It looks almost new. It even has the original Cole Steel ribbon spools!
If you are ever fourtunate enough to run into one of these, they have a nice snappy action and are great to use. However, I would recommend protecting the fragile innards by keeping the bottom of the case attached when you type.
