1961 Adler Special Serial # 2243998 1961 Adler Special typewriter, Serial # 2243998 Laurenz van Gaalen's 1961 Adler Special typewriter. 2024-12-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Laurenz van Gaalen: 1961 Adler Special Serial # 2243998 Adler’s standard for the most common office task: correspondence.

Although the Special is lighter and flatter than regular standards, it is a big machine. The typing experience is excellent; both the action and keyboard design suit my taste very well. Thanks to the big feet a typing pad is not necessary.

It is the unusual margin and tab system that prevents this machine from being my favourite standard. Using one lever for setting and clearing margins and tabs is something I find often confusing.

From a design point of view – both the concept and its implementation – the Special is definitely an interesting machine.

Google translation from the introductory text in the user manual:

“Adler Special
The perfect correspondence machine
The Adler Special, a remarkable new creation of the expanded Adler typewriter range, was developed for economic reasons with the aim of completing the most extensive writing work in the office – correspondence – quickly and neatly, even with multiple copies. Industry, trade, transport, business and administration demand this special model.”

Tip to clear the right margin: move the carriage to the left until it is stopped by the right margin. Backspace once and use the set/clear lever to clear the margin.
