Description:
When I found it in Hawkesbury, Ontario, for C$20, I had no idea this model was not well represented on this database. So here are a few photos taken quickly.
From James Grooms:
"A one-year plus some months model. A styling update of the SX/Golden Touch to match the electric models. The Five is the same to match the Scriptor, Forum and Raphael. Underwood is failing fast and doing whatever they can to move something."
Some decal and labels are absent on the body: no line space numbering, no bichrome indicators, no rear model label. So I just have to thank Uwe for having posted photos of one here first! I do wonder if the Canadian models really followed the US production dates; I could see that it might still have been made in Canada well after the US plants shut down assembly.
It's a Distinctive Elite typeface, and a Canadian bilingual keyboard layout.
This margin scale is ordered from 0 to 130 from left to right, unlike the original model 5 standard.
The lower scale, smaller in size is used for centering text on the page.
The up arrow is to set margins for a 7" line, the dot is for a 6" long line, the square for a 5" line and, the down arrow is for a 4" line.
It will not type properly. For some reason the on feet and motion adjustments were set by a madman. The left and the right side of the end points are working against each other. So it prints the bottom of the uppercase and the top of the lowercase caracters at the same time. I had never seen that before! Haven't worked on it yet....

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.
Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.
Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Touchmaster II on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Touchmaster II By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
