1960 Tower Tabulator Serial # 5 CT411741 1960 Tower Tabulator typewriter, Serial # 5 CT411741 Michael Hoehne's 1960 Tower Tabulator typewriter. 2019-01-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Michael Hoehne: 1960 Tower Tabulator Serial # 5 CT411741 This is a Smith-Corona 5-series, made for the Sears “Tower†brand. I had thought that this brand was in honor of the famous Sears Tower in Chicago but this typewriter was made many years before the tower was. Must be something else going on.

It came in a nifty, snappy pressed steel Holiday case in a cream tweed pattern that is a nice change from the darker S-C versions. The typewriter works well, as usual, and all-in-all this is a nice package.

Be sure to read the note about the atomic logo, below.

At first glance this is the iconic "Atom" icon so ubiquitous in the 1950s but when you do the double-take, you realize it is a very clever "SR" for Sears Roebuck. Neat, eh?

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
