Description:
An early example of the legendary 6 series. The ads rolled out in the Fall of 1959 and Smith Corona spent heavily on the rollout. "New in style, speed and spirit..."
I let this one sit on the shelf for a long time because it was a greasy pig with a dozen typebars loose and some of the links bent badly. It turned out pretty nice. I think I should've treated it for UV but I am not sure how true white it was originally. Maybe the white plastic bits were more off white with this Apache Tan?
It is interesting to note the things they would change. The ribbon vibrator gets updated later with the plastic card guide and different ribbon holder. I like the 5 Series holdover version. The feet are short on this and so the machine has a much lower stance on the desk. This is the only version of this "Trimline" case that I've had with a still functioning latch/handle. The later ones get a metal brace that the screws go into. On these they screw into the plastic part and the plastic breaks. Also, there is no front latch holding the typer down. I wonder why they ditched the paper bail/paper release combo. I think it is pretty slick vs the standard system they would go back to. Toward the end of the 6 line they will go back to this setup.
Max Boyd had been in business 35 years in 1964 and was still around as late as 1974. I wonder if they made it to 50?

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Galaxie on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Galaxie By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
