Strangely, even though it seemed to have barely been used, the ribbon lift was missing a spring, which meant that the ribbon could pop out of place with vigorous use. This appears to have been an issue with this model- either the spring was left off some machines , or it was very easily lost. In any case, Mary E. of the My Old Typewriter blog agreed to try to the replace the spring for me. She wound up replacing the whole ribbon lift system using the one from her parts Safari. She wrote a very interesting blog post about the process, in which you can see how Royal improved the ribbon lift design in later models so that the spring would stay in place: https://myoldtypewriter.com/
