Description:
Smith Corona Empire from 1959. It is a SC Hermes Baby/Rocket clone. I bought it locally from a lady, who said it was her father's and he was the original owner. It had been in storage for years.
This typewriter was almost in complete working order when I bought it. Obviously after sitting for decades, it needed general cleaning and polishing. There was some hardened oils in the basket that needed to be cleaned out. Current the machine works well, but at times the backspace key doesn't work. I'll probably find a permanent fix this issue soon.
This clone is just like a late 50's Hermes Baby/rocket. The internals and body are a complete copy and I'm glad to say it types just as well too.

I'm a software engineer in the Chicagoland area. I've been collecting "vintage" vinyl, computers, mechanical keyboards and typewriters since I was a kid. Born into an analog world, but grew up in a digital one.
My wife is a writer and I enjoy problem solving and puzzles, so naturally fixing I fell in love with fixing and maintaining typewriters and she then gets to enjoy all of these machines!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Empire on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Empire By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
