1959 Rooy IN Serial # 415292 1959 Rooy IN typewriter, Serial # 415292 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1959 Rooy IN typewriter. 2022-12-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1959 Rooy IN Serial # 415292 This typewriter would place well in an originality contest.

Rooy typewriters are moderately rare in Spain, and when the chance showed up I seized it. This machine has several quirks that even if they're not critically useful they're nice enough.

First, there's the body. It speaks for itself. Then there's the ribbon spool covers which are cool and open by turning them to the outer side. And then there's the paper holder. Oh, and the absurder (more than absurd) placement of the s/n. All these features add up to a quirky and beautiful typewriter which still doesn't work. It needs a good cleaning, oiling, a new ribbon... but nothing more apart from common maintenance. Everything is undamaged. I hope I can upload a type sample soon, because the typeface is truly beautiful.
--- UPDATE ---
Finally! This typewriter is back at home, fully serviced and operational. It's taken a bit longer than expected, but all's well that ends well. In any case, my absolute record in terms of doing things late is 12 years. That's the time that passed since a friend told me to read Stephen King's The Dark Half until I finally did it. The funny part is that it took me about a week to read it, and the rest of the 12 years (more than 600 weeks) were just me.

French AZERTY keyboard... How I hate this layout, but typewriters like this are a good counterbalance.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
