1959 Olympia SM4 Serial # 1425825 1959 Olympia SM4 typewriter, Serial # 1425825 Massimo Martelancz's 1959 Olympia SM4 typewriter. 2020-12-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Massimo Martelancz: 1959 Olympia SM4 Serial # 1425825 The Olympia SM series was one of the most popular and successful typewriters in Germany and beyond. They were beautiful and robust machines, superior to most competing machines of the same era. Although very similar to the previous SM2 and SM3, the SM4 had some extra devices that made it the top technology of the time. Perhaps because of the high selling price, it was produced for only three years and replaced by the Monica and SM5 models that actually went back to SM2. The SM4 is therefore not a very common machine today. This specimen is in the classic and common dark green color. As for the previous models the machine was also offered in other shades. Strangely enough the usually common for typewriters black color is one of the less common colors today for the SM4.

I have been an Italian typewriter collector for many many years. At that time, I loved very old typewriters from late 1800s to early 1900s. After a break of a few years I returned to collect typewriters but no longer so old, I prefer now the design of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Yes, I am an affectionate collector of Olivetti, of course, but I'm attracted to all the other brands from that period, not just Italian.
