1958 Tower President Serial # 5TT771200X 1958 Tower President typewriter, Serial # 5TT771200X Michael Hoehne's 1958 Tower President typewriter. 2018-09-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Michael Hoehne: 1958 Tower President Serial # 5TT771200X This Sears Tower is the President model, a rebranded Smith-Corona Super 5 body. I wonder what they were thinking about keeping a light-tan wrinkle paint finish clean; I don’t think much of it now. It does work well if you forgive the very faint bell. (I was going to say, “... if you ignore the very faint bell”, but that is all too easy.) Oh, yes, it came with that nice S-C stamped steel case in faux tweed.

This shows the FitSall(R) spool system, which consists of a metal spool with a large center opening, probably to fit over the ribbon core of those typewriters that use cores instead of spools, and then a red plastic insert to fill that space with the more usual spool spindle. Curiously, even the hole in the insert is too big for this Smith-Corona; there might have been a yet smaller insert to take the diameter down from this size, which fits Olivettis.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
