1958 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 749645X 1958 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter, Serial # 5T 749645X Greg Mattesen's 1958 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter. 2025-02-05 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1958 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 749645X I spotted this Silent-Super in a local Marketplace ad in November 2023, and was interested mostly because of the color. When I went to pick it up, it turned out to have the Artistic Script typeface. It was moldy and dirty, but I love the way these 5-series respond to care and cleaning. I soon had it working well and looking sharp. I had another Silent-Super that I had gotten a new platen for, and when I swapped it onto this machine I understood why they dubbed them "Silent": it is really very quiet when typing.

Artistic Script is a very tall typeface, so the ribbon selector only has two positions: black and stencil. It uses a single-color ribbon.

The stripes on this one are painted on top of the wrinkle finish paint, unlike the other Silent-Supers I own. They have stripes that appear to have been painted on before the wrinkle finish.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
