1958 Royal FP Serial # FPS-21-6552708 1958 Royal FP typewriter, Serial # FPS-21-6552708 James Grooms's 1958 Royal FP typewriter. 2025-10-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1958 Royal FP Serial # FPS-21-6552708 You see an FPS and you start looking at the slugs. However, this odd duck has the common "SE" standard elite typeface. The only thing unusual is the +/= key and all the associated parts are gone. Go figure. Why would you need a machine with that slug removed?

It was part of a package deal; otherwise, it would have most likely ended up in the dumpster. I knew it had suffered one minor blow that broke the RS carriage knob, but it didn't look to be too severe. Who knew that all sorts of things would be out of whack. The scrapes on the LS of the carriage bearing rod indicate it may have had multiple blows. The tab tower was bent. The margin release system was bent, and I don't see how the heck that happened. As well, one of the typebars was bent on the back side where the link attached, and I had a heck of a time trying to figure out why that one key would hang up. The trip point was and sorta still is all over the place. How all these things went south with no external dents is a mystery.

Another wide carriage lives!

Belcher Typewriter Service, located in Webster Grove, Mo., opened in 1951 and remained in business until 1988. When Lou Belcher passed away in 1969, his wife assumed control. Few independent shops ran more ads than the Belcher's did.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
