Description:
First purchase from a typewriter shop, long awaited as a birthday gift in 2024. Received in sub-optimal packaging with the backspace key not moving carriage, misaligned capitals and the ribbon vibrator hanging up on red setting. Attributed to shipping damage; attempted repair via local shop to mitigate further risk of shipping damage - mostly due to the lovely Congress typeface. Unfortunately the backspace issue persisted which could not be justified at the professional price point and the seller accepted the machine back, my first and hopefully last return.

If I were a typewriter, I'd have German engineering, an Australian work ethic and a couple of stray Russian letters on my keyboard. In other words, my doggy DNA test claims I'm 75% German Shepherd, 15% Aussie Cattle Dog, 10% Husky. Not quite as advertised by the SPCA - a "Shepherd/Alaskan Malamute mix" - like the hidden gem of a machine described as purely decorative or, worse still, for parts. Like some typewriters, I know how it feels to be old, discarded and in bad shape before being joyfully re-discovered by owners who give me pride of place and tell everyone else how lucky they are to have scored a special guy like me. 100% Good Boy.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia SM3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia SM3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
