1957 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE134582 1957 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter, Serial # 5TE134582 Greg Mattesen's 1957 Smith Corona Electric Portable typewriter. 2025-02-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1957 Smith Corona Electric Portable Serial # 5TE134582 I've primarily been interested in manual typewriters on my collecting journey, but 5-series Smith-Coronas are some of my favorites, so I had to have the electric version. Purchased in June 2022, this one was quite dirty and looked like it might have been stored in an attic (thus the warped spacebar). I plugged it in and typed about 3 letters before one of the belts snapped, but after replacing them with o-rings, it worked great.

Sold to another collector November 2023.

I purchased these O-rings in the plumbing section of Lowes. They work well to replace the no-longer-available belts.

The electric portable is slightly larger than a manual 5-series Smith-Corona machine. The case is also slightly larger.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
