1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AE3472972 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # AE3472972 James Grooms's 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2026-11-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AE3472972 The 6th and last generation of the QDL. The same tired mechanism with two extra keys and then stuffed into a cast body. Choral Rose is what I think this color is. This matches the HH option for 57 and Royal was always working towards matching the portables to the standards. E stands for RosE, possibly?

This one was very dirty and had bad gas. I put it in the sink while assembled and scrubbed the life out of it with dish soap. Then I power-washed the plastic bits with a hot spray to get the key gassing off.

The cover welds had failed. I used a generic Harbor Freight clear epoxy. And much to the chagrin of the JB Weld police, I didn't prep or apply it correctly.

The north-south alignment was a mess and took some time to get it just ok. The ribbon drive also drove me nuts.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
