1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AT3632945 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # AT3632945 Suzanne LaPierre's 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2025-06-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 1957 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AT3632945 I was thrilled to find this beautiful 1957 turquoise QDL on Facebook Marketplace being offered as part of a lot of 7 machines! Well worth the one+ hour drive to the Baltimore area. I believe this to be a single owner machine, as it so well kept and was being cleared out of a home after the owner passed away. I believe the original owner to be Renate Herz Berzon - she and her husband Dr. David Berzon lived at 11 Oak Hollow Court in Pikesville/ Baltimore, MD, a nice neighborhood of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes, where I picked up the machines from a young man who was cleaning out the house and didn't want them to wind up in the trash. The collection of machines seemed to tell the story of a lifetime through typewriter technology. This was probably Renate's college typewriter, as she was 19 when it was made. There was also an Underwood Leader dated 1949, which may have belonged to David or Renate when they were in high school, or to one of their parents. There were a few electric typewriters, one of which has Renate's type sample using her name and address inside, showing them upgrading to the latest in typewriter tech through the 70s and 80s. I have named this blue one Eleanor, after one of Renate's daughters (I snoop obituaries for the important purpose of typewriter provenance) and I will name the Underwood Leader after Renate. This machine needed little more than a light cleaning, Magic Margin adjustment, and a new ribbon.

My two QDLs, made 6 years apart. A few differences: the 1957 has a button to pop-up the ribbon cover, a "1" key, and notches cut out of the sides to accommodate more keys. Slightly different typefaces, too, as the '57 has Canterbury. The red logo on the turquoise model is also a nice touch. I do like the art deco flourishes around the ribbon color change lever and ribbon reverse lever on the older QDL, though.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. I find the tactile nature of typing on a manual machine soothing and joyful. Each typewriter seems to have a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
