1957 Olympia SM3 Serial # 894561 1957 Olympia SM3 typewriter, Serial # 894561 Wayne Bouchard's 1957 Olympia SM3 typewriter. 2025-01-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1957 Olympia SM3 Serial # 894561 An Grey Olympia SM3 from 1957. Serial number 894561 with Elite 8 typeface. Since this is metric, this is technically 11 characters per inch and 6LPI, but since we're used 12 characters on elite, that's what I marked on the type sample.

There is nothing particular special about this typewriter. It is a classic SM3 with the spring loaded keytops and full width tab system. The typewriter, when I got it, had a fair degree of white rust on certain parts, such as the intermediate levers and the rods for the feed rollers and such in the carriage. I opted to disassemble the segment and fulcrum in order to get at these to clean them up properly. The case isn't in quite as good of condition as the typewriter. The paint is cracked (as usual) but, additionally, the feet are gone and the covering over several of the nails used to assemble it have come loose, allowing the nail heads to rust. This has been mostly corrected, but preventing future oxidation will be difficult, even with a clear coat over the nails.

Notice the rectangle on the case. This label came off of it. I thought about putting it back on, but decided I'd rather have the original finish of the typewriter. The address of the shop ion question (117 S Maine Ave, Sioux Falls, SD) is now literally a parking lot.

Elite No 8. (11 pitch since this is metric, and 6 LPI)

Serial number 894561. Located beneath the typewriter on the rear support bracket. Notice that, while this was very well done, it looks like it was put on with an electro-pen.

Feet are missing and the covering for five of the nails is also gone. I put a clear coat over the nails to preserve them from future oxidation.
