1957 Imperial Good Companion 4 Serial # 4H-728 1957 Imperial Good Companion 4 typewriter, Serial # 4H-728 Greg Mattesen's 1957 Imperial Good Companion 4 typewriter. 2025-02-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1957 Imperial Good Companion 4 Serial # 4H-728 Really clean Imperial 4 that I found at an antiques store in Port Royal, Virginia in May 2021. Every other one I've seen has a decal that says "Good Companion 4" and mine just says "Imperial 4": not sure what that's about. This is an ultraportable-size typewriter with a carriage shift. The typebars have a very long throw, starting from a nearly horizontal resting point and striking the top of the platen; this reminds me of the old Remingtons that had the segment that would raise for typing, but this one has a fixed segment. The case is molded fiberglass. The number row of keys is offset to the right by one key compared to my other typewriters, so I frequently hit the wrong number when typing.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
