Description:
This is my 2nd Torpedo 18b, as I briefly owned a 1961 model in the past. Of the two, I'm more impressed with this 1956 machine. The previous 18b that I owned had issues with those keys associated with letters whose shapes contained sharp peaks or valleys (such as "V", "W", "K", "Y", etc.) where the top surface of the key was peeling back wherever the letter shapes came to a sharp point. I also like what appears to be black anodized hardware found throughout this older machine to prevent corrosion. I also prefer the hard case that came with this '56 model as compared to the soft case of the '61 model.

I'm likely more of a casual typewriteaphile than a typewriter humter/collector. That said, what started with a single Olympia SM9 quickly expanded to include two more Olympia typewriters: a 2nd SM9 and a mighty SG3. I've now gone on to add other brands, but thus far I remain most interested in the machines from the 1950's - 1970's. I use all of the typewriters that I own. Typing out a letter, or typing almost anything for that matter, brings me a great deal of satisfaction. The typewriters themselves appeal to my appreciation for well designed mechanical devices.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Torpedo 18b on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Torpedo Serial Number page and the Torpedo 18b By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
