1956 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 466085X 1956 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter, Serial # 5T 466085X Wayne Bouchard's 1956 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter. 2024-04-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1956 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 466085X A Silent Super from 1956. This is one of my favorite typewriters and the first one I spent time trying to restore. The case was two shades darker when I started and I was surprised by how well it came out. I did not expect it to brighten up as much as it did. Within the 5T series, this was the top notch, above the Standard and the Sterling. It has keyboard set tabs, a 1 and = key, and a touch control. In keeping with the era, note the "rabbit ears" paper support. This is a great typewriter to use, but requires good technique to keep it from skipping. So there may be a little more tuning that can be done, but right now, even though it does have a few scars, it hasn't been abused and it's in great shape and works like a champ!

Smith-Corona knew a good thing when they had it and knew enough not to tinker too much with it, This is essentially the same mechanical design as the 3 and 4 series and with few changes, extended on into the 6s and even later, even into the later electrics.

One of the marketing gimmicks used during the era was the so-called "Holiday Case", in which you could remove the hardware needed to support the typewriter and use the case as luggage or a large brief case if desired. I have no idea how popular this feature became, but it's an interesting idea and certainly makes cleaning the case and de-rusting the hardware a lot easier.

Started collecting typewriters in 2023 with a Royal HHE like the one I did my first book report on when I was in school and using my dad's old typewriter.
