Description:
Produced by the Tokyo Shibaura Denki Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo Electric Co., Ltd.), this is a heavy (11-plus kg) all metal index typewriter with a very prominent "drum" that contains 1,404 characters spread in 36 rows or lines. It also has one small section in one of these lines for replacement of other special characters. This one I acquired here in Japan even has its accompanying box containing some of the replaceable characters, as well as pliers and clips to do this. As far as I can tell this typewriter runs well but the ink has apparently dried on the tip of the "wand" that strikes the platen when you select a character using its built-in pointer. For its age, the platen is still very fine and not hardened or brittle. People abroad say this typewriter is very rare even here in Japan. But I see some of them being auctioned every week here, including a model with longer carriage and platen.

I'm an archaeologist who writes heritage books and collects Japanese ceramics as well as quite a number of typewriters that I've acquired through purchase or as gifts over the last 10 years in the Philippines as well as in the US and Japan.
I'm currently a visiting professor at a university in Japan and it is heaven here to see so many typewriters being auctioned online!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Toshiba 1400H on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Toshiba Serial Number page and the Toshiba 1400H By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
