1953 Underwood Correspondent Serial # M2324751 1953 Underwood Correspondent typewriter, Serial # M2324751 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1953 Underwood Correspondent typewriter. 2026-05-24 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1953 Underwood Correspondent Serial # M2324751 A 1953 Underwood Correspondent. Seems like this variant of the Underwood portables are more rare than the others.

Unlike my Leader from the same year, this model has a totally different case, and different method of attachment. While my other Underwood portables share the "post into front rubber feet" mechanism, this one is just screwed into the case bottom. Also, the case has a totally different construction, without the removable hinge mechanism. Instead, the case is set up more like my 30's Remington portable case, where the bottom has a tab that fits into the back of the lid, and the front of the lid latches onto the front of the bottom.

Also, where the earlier portable's segment had that tab the poked out, it instead has a rod. Closer inspection of the bottom shows quite a few differences compared to previous portable Underwoods. So either the Correspondent is a totally different, unrelated model to the other portables, or in 1952, sometime between this model and my 1952 Leader (S/N 2303560), there was a redesign of the portables.

This model has no ribbon color selector, and though the body has the spot a touch selecter would be, there is no touch selector. Not completely sure if it is just missing from this example or if that is how these came.

The mechanism seems to be otherwise similar to earlier portables, and feels about the same.

Another Goodwill Auction acquisition, shipped out from Georgia.

The bottom shows that it is not compatible with previous cases. There is no spot for the front rubber feet. Comparison with other Underwood portables show quite a few differences, even compared to a Leader made in the same year 1952.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.

Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Correspondent on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Correspondent By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
