1953 Smith Corona Super Serial # 5T 120177 1953 Smith Corona Super typewriter, Serial # 5T 120177 Wayne Bouchard's 1953 Smith Corona Super typewriter. 2024-12-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1953 Smith Corona Super Serial # 5T 120177 A Smith-Corona Suoer typewriter. Elite No. 2 typeface (12 pitch, 6 LPI) in Sapphire Grey with the green accent stripes on the ribbon cover.
This is an interesting model. At this time, you could find Clipper, Sterling, Super, Silent, and Silent-Super typewriters. The difference here was simply marketing. The Clipper was the basic and had no frills. Not even a paper bail. When you got up to the Silent-Super, you had the "1" and "+" keys as well as the full carriage keyboard-set tab stops, and all the quieting features of the Silent models. However, there was little reason to have both the Silent and the Super and it seems to me like the Super wasn't a common seller, since it seems to be harder to find than the others. This particular typewriter also has Elite typeface, which seems also to be less common than Pica No 1.

The typewriter was found in excellent condition, needing only a cleaning and a few adjustments. There are a couple of minor scuffs on the body, but that is all. An interesting feature is the case, which has printed plastic panels affixed to it that are meant to resemble a light green tweed fabric. The interior of the case is also the same dark green color of the accent stripes. Also of interest to me is what is apparently a dealer plate affixed to the right side of the typewriter, bearing the name of the Journal-Chronicle Co. of Owatonna, Minnesota. As I gather, this company was still in business until it went bankrupt in 2018.

I love the matching dark green interior!

A closeup view of the case pattern. This is NOT fabric. It is a print on plastic made to LOOK like tweed fabric.

I found this "34" written on the carriage when I removed the paper deflector for cleaning. No idea whether the owner put it there or the manufacturer or what it means.
