1952 Smith Corona Silent Serial # 5S327497 1952 Smith Corona Silent typewriter, Serial # 5S327497 Brent Wegher's 1952 Smith Corona Silent typewriter. 2025-04-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brent Wegher: 1952 Smith Corona Silent Serial # 5S327497 Labor day sale. Fully functional, needs ribbon.
Nice type action, has touch control.
Added typeface sample with new ribbon.
Noticed that this machine made a clicking noise during carriage return.
By luck, Duane had a recent video on youtube showing how to resolve this.
Found that this machine had the exact same fault, a very minor distortion of plastic shim that interfered with the starwheel clearance pawl.
Used xacto blade to trim away one side of the plastic part. This is just an aging issue with that plastic part.
Now there is no noise, it was not a very bad problem, but the fix makes the machine sound like new.
This machine is in exceptional condition, almost flawless, a few very tiny dirt marks around the return lever. Also found a few flecks of white-out while cleaning the carriage rollers, Not a spot of rust anywhere that I could see, which is likely due to being stored in a very dry environment.
One flaw is that the platen rubber has become hard, but that does not harm the type if a backing sheet is used.

Typing down thoughts, prefer that to handwriting.
Not really a collector, just like to tinker on mechanical things.
