Copied from user Ian Brumfeld:

"On March 6th, 1942, the United States government declared that all typewriter sales would cease, including the rental and rebuilding of machines. On March 15 in compliance with the government, Royal drastically scaled back its production of standard and portable machines. All of the machines manugactured after March 15th, 1942, were built specifically for use by the government, the armed forces, or for war contractors. That means that this QDL is one of those machines! It is also approximately 7k machines away from the production halt, meaning that (so far) this machine is the closest known to the production halt!"

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Clipper on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Clipper By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
