1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AG-2258428 1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # AG-2258428 Elisa Makoon-Singh's 1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2025-05-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Elisa Makoon-Singh: 1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # AG-2258428 This was one of the first typewriters that I won in a ShopGoodwill online auction in the very early days of my typewriter collecting. I was still learning how the online auctions worked, and the opening bid was at $12.99, so I placed a max bid for $21. I ended up winning it for exactly $21, which means I just beat the second highest bidder by a mere $1.

Denny cleaned it all up, oiled it, and even formed parts of the magic margin cover plate and back panel, which seemed to have suffered a drop at some point. I plan to replace this low quality Amazon ribbon with some BACO ribbon that we have. This was the second machine (I believe) that Denny worked on, and it started his love for Royals - in general - but especially Quiet De Luxes. I was very impressed with how well this machine cleaned up, considering its (arguably) drab gray color, and keyboard which arrived full of off gassing. Notice the neon pink draw band that Denny made out of some cord he had in the basement.

Denny and I feel as though Royal QDLs (especially if not a cute fun color) are criminally underrated and overlooked machines. This one feels lovely to type on. It has a pleasant sound, soft and chunky, not at all tinny or loud.

We took this machine to a type-in event in Philadelphia. Someone there noted that the keys are green and the space bar is gray, possibly indicating that the space bar had been replaced at some point? I am really not sure, as I have seen other machines with mismatched space bars.

Elite typeface.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
