1951 Olympia SM1 Serial # 103177 1951 Olympia SM1 typewriter, Serial # 103177 Mark Petersen's 1951 Olympia SM1 typewriter. 2016-04-26 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mark Petersen: 1951 Olympia SM1 Serial # 103177 Had a Baltimore friend snag this for me when I spotted it on craigslist. $35 was a great buy for a maroon machine! The hinges on the case were broke but I fixed them, and the paint is pretty damaged because a lit cigarette was once placed on the ribbon cover (which you should never do unless you have a Smith Corona with the electrostatic finish, and even then...) It looked like the past owner tried to remedy the damage with wax, but the machine looks better since I scraped that all off.

Can't buy hinges quite like the old ones easily, so I improvised but it works just fine and now the machine can be taken around and used out of the house.
