Description:
Nickname "Smitty"
My first typewriter. Purchased on Etsy for too much money before I knew any better but absolutely love the machine. Sapphire grey crinkle paint and green keys. It types like a dream and everything works as it should. 1949-1950 was the first model year for the 5 series and one thing unique to this model year (and a little into 1951) is that the Smith-Corona brand badge on the front is metal, not plastic like it was during following model years. Whenever you see the metal brand badge on a 5 Series, you know it was built sometime during 1949-1951.

Metastatic cancer fighter and sudden cardiac arrest survivor who has gotten into vintage typewriter collecting after realizing that life is short and typewriters are fascinating. I currently have 9 machines, 2 ultraportables (a Hermes Baby Spanish keyboard and Hermes Rocket), 4 medium portables (an SM3, an S/C Silent and Silent Super and a Hermes 3000), and 3 desk standards (an SG1, Royal HH and S/C Super Speed). My machines range from 1947 to 1968 and I type on all of them and have given each of them a name. Have I mentioned that life is short? I look forward to putting together my galleries for all 9 machines. I am having great fun with this obsessi- I mean hobby. I live in San Diego, California.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Silent on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Silent By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
