Description:
My first and completely functional typewriter, bought from an antique dealer in Saigon, Vietnam.
The Patria needs some cleaning and lubricating, and the ribbon vibrator was loosened from its lever, as well as the right paper-release lever. I was able to reattach the ribbon vibrator but couldn't fix the paper-release lever. Nevertheless, it does not affect the functionality of the typewriter as the right lever still works.
The Keys are a bit brittle due to age and storing conditions, but a bit of superglue fixes it right up while I go look for replacement keys.
The keyboard uses the French AZERTY layout.
I am curious about the production history of this typewriter, it seems to be produced during or just after World War II, around 1945-1946 onwards by the Japy Company in France. I am aware that Japy changed their Patria models name to Japy in the late 1940s, 1950s. Other specimens I have seen on the Database have the "Patria" nameplate engraved with no painting, mine is instead painted in with red paint, perhaps a war-time substitution? Or a minor aesthetic change right after the war ? The serial numbers is pretty high so one would assume it was made in the late 1940s, but then it contradicts with the fact that later Patria models uses square black/green keys, while mine retains the old round black keys seen in the 1940s.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Patria (France) Patria on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Patria (France) Serial Number page and the Patria (France) Patria By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
