Description:
The last of the typewriters at the town hall of my village, along with a Lexicon 80 and an Orga Privat 5.
This one was not in working condition until I came in. It just needed a nudge here, pulling a bit there, and everything was back in place. Now in order to type again it would need cleaning, oiling and a new ribbon. But it´s complete and undamaged, a good example of how tough these machines are.
This is a M40/2. There are a few M40´s here, but so far only one of them includes the M40/x format. I wonder if it would be adequate to adapt the entries to that format, or it´s better to keep them as M40 just like the Underwood 5 family.
I´ve told the people at the town hall that if they want to, I can get this beautiful typewriter ready for action, just in case our secretary wants to use it instead of the Lexicon 80. The town hall serves just 850 people, so everybody knows each other, and they´ve been very friendly letting me tinker with their stuff.
BONUS FEATURE: Guess what I´ve found along with this M40? A Hispano Olivetti cleaning kit (eraser included) and a original Underwood ribbon! ¡Toma ya*!
*(Oh yeah, man!)

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.
A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hispano-Olivetti M40 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hispano-Olivetti Serial Number page and the Hispano-Olivetti M40 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
