Description:
This is my first purchase of a manual typewriter. I bought it at a local antique shop last week, where it caught my eye after watching the "California Typewriter" documentary.
It was marked at $145, but my offer of $120 was accepted. I probably paid too much for it, but it was there!

I'm a grandmother who just recently bought a Smith-Corona Silent (Type 5) manual typewriter. I was inspired to buy one from watching the "California Typewriter" documentary. I've always loved typing, so this is a really fun project for me. I've cleaned and oiled it and am just waiting for my new ribbon from Ribbons Unlimited to be delivered so I can use it!
My machine's serial number is: 5S124609 which is earlier than the number you have listed in the database for my machine. It was labeled as a 1953 machine, but I'm wondering if it's actually a 1949 machine? Thank you!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Silent on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Silent By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
