1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A-1981129 1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # A-1981129 Elisa Makoon-Singh's 1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2025-05-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Elisa Makoon-Singh: 1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A-1981129 This lovely gem of a typewriter was listed on Facebook marketplace, and I immediately noticed that it contains Spanish diacritics. It was listed for $50, and it was about a 2 hour drive away. Before deciding to purchase it, I requested some close up photos from the seller. When I received the additional photos, the machine looked very dirty, and appeared rusty. Based on the photos, I almost did not buy it. Luckily, however, I had a typewriter friend on Facebook talk some sense into me. Furthermore, Denny pointed out to me that I was looking at dirt and dust in the photos and not rust. He was right. The seller even agreed to lower the price, as it came without a case. But I paid the full $50 because I felt that it was a more than fair price. It is the first Royal with Spanish diacritics that I have seen available.

I did a superficial cleaning, but we have yet to tune this one up. It had been in a barn where it sat with no case and no dust cover, until that kind gentleman, who had been hired to clean out the barn, rescued it. That being said, it is not missing anything and appears to be in good shape. I look forward to having it in working order, at which point I will add a type sample.

This machine with its Dreyfus design is very stylish, and feels much smaller and more compact than the 1950s versions.

I feel incredibly lucky to have happened upon this fabulous Royal with SPANISH diacritics.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
