To answer a question I have long had: yes, this machine is more like and nearly equal to the machines made before it than the ones made after it. Originally I did not like the looks of the '49, but seeing it in paint other than the dual grey two tone I admit it has grown on me somewhat. It certainly types like a dream.
I found it in an antique store in Salem, Virginia for $40 and it is in excellent mechanical order. It was full of WD-40 grime, but a little elbow grease has gotten the machine feeling as it should.
