1948 Underwood Universal Serial # F1779841 1948 Underwood Universal typewriter, Serial # F1779841 Elisa Makoon-Singh's 1948 Underwood Universal typewriter. 2025-05-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Elisa Makoon-Singh: 1948 Underwood Universal Serial # F1779841 Beautiful typewriter. Needs a deep cleaning.

My typewriter journey started with a Royalite, then an Olympia, then a Maritsa, followed by some Smith Coronas, then Made in USA Royals, and Remingtons, and Olivettis.... the entire Underwood brand was *under* my radar (no pun intended) and I ignored the brand completely for the first 8 months of my collecting journey.

But all it takes is one type test. I was at my friend Rick's shop (Karl Business Machines) and he had a Universal that had not yet been serviced, but he told me to type on it and test it out. Holy feedback Batman! The type action was so snappy I just fell in love at first thwack.

That same day, I searched Facebook marketplace for an Underwood Universal and this here machine popped up in my area for a decent price and not too far a drive. I made plans for the next morning, and just like that, I got my first Underwood. First of many more I hope. The gentleman I bought it from was selling it for a friend. He said it belonged to the friend's parents. It came with the original paperwork and everything.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
