1948 Underwood Rhythm Touch Serial # 11-6350270 1948 Underwood Rhythm Touch typewriter, Serial # 11-6350270 Philippe To's 1948 Underwood Rhythm Touch typewriter. 2016-11-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Philippe To: 1948 Underwood Rhythm Touch Serial # 11-6350270 I found this little pearl in a Chelsea (VT) antique store and fell in love.

I had been looking for my first typewriter for a while and this one will do just fine.

This machine is massively heavy (definitely weighs more than my MacBook Pro!), but there is something to say about its personality. The line spacing is uneven (as can be seen in my typeface specimen) and my carriage return will bring the start of my sentence one character earlier than the rest of my paragraph maybe once a page. However, all of these quirks are what make this little guy unique.

Part of the Underwood Standard collection

It came with a practical typewriter pad to keep my desk from getting scratched.

(N.B.: My typeface specimen indicates Underwood 11 when it is actually an Underwood SS. A confusion that seems to be shared by some fellow hunters. The model indicates an 11 before the series # which was the reason for my confusion. it turns out the 11 is the size of the paper it takes and not its model (?))

(EDIT: Apparently it is a Rhythm Touch? This is getting confusing)

The serial number that has confused some of us. The ll at the start of the series of number apparently stands for page size. (Sorry for the grime!)

I am a recent typewriter collector. Have been searching for an Underwood to call mine for years now, and have finally found a beautiful Underwood #11 in a Vermont antique's store. I'm excited to start this journey and am already itching for new machines. Anyone have a Cursive Remington Sperry Rand or an Erika 5 to give away? ;)

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Rhythm Touch on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Rhythm Touch By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
