1948 Moskva 2 Serial # 12503 1948 Moskva 2 typewriter, Serial # 12503 Nikita Efremov's 1948 Moskva 2 typewriter. 2025-05-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Nikita Efremov: 1948 Moskva 2 Serial # 12503 This is a very unique example of a very early Post-WW2 Moskva Model 2, prior to it's restoration.

First of all, this is currently the earliest known and preserved Model 2 typewriter in existence, 12503 (previous earliest known is 17,674). It is also known from a passport that a unit 17991 was made in April 1949 and 20863 in October 1949. That means that production numbers during that period were about 400 machines a month, this lands this unit in roughly March 1948.

A unique feature of this machine is a Giant logo finished in blue metallic, compared to later Model 2 units. It's 25,8 mm instead of the usual 18.3mm!
It is unknown whether it had the metal protection pieces above type guide or not from the factory. It has all the threads for it, but it seems they were never used. Maybe they had some shortage of parts back then.
The back metal plate has only 4 bolts, just like all other Model 2 units, but no factory writing on it was ever made.

The paint on these machines aged quite badly. If you try to clean it with any kind of cleaner, it just melts into a brown sticky mess.

It has a weird layout, a modern ЙЦУКЕН instead of the period-correct Й1УКЕН, but there are no traces of it being adjusted or changed, everything looks factory and even. The only odd labels are Upper Register - they are too big for the buttons. But...I kinda beleive it was like that in the factory.

Also, despite it's premium looks, the buttons on all Moskva Model 1 and 2 typewriter are not covered by glass. Instead, they are laminated in thin plastic!
