1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A1347494 1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, Serial # A1347494 Daniel Burgoyne's 1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter. 2024-01-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Burgoyne: 1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe Serial # A1347494 This machine was purchased locally in Ottawa in May 2021 from the family of the original owner (Rolland La Prairie) who had it from 1947 to 2019 for his own personnal and professional use as a lawyer. His name, address in Montréal and year of purchase are written on the typing guide.

It came in a nice condition, black leatherette-covered hard wooden case, with the original brush, an owner's manual in French, a typing instruction booklet in English and a cardboard "instant typing chart" made to fit between the 3rd and 4th rows of keys in order to help in learning the touch-typing method.

Made in Canada and equipped with a QWERTY Canadian bilingual keyboard layout, the typeface is Elite 12 cpi. The action of the keys is very responsive, yet easy of the fingers, making it one of the best manual machine in my collection for touch-typing. The carriage return travel makes a pleasant delicate whizzing sound, thanks to its 12 cpi pitch typeface. The platen on this machine must surely have been professionally replaced not too many years ago as the surface is smooth and supple, making it a very quiet mahine indeed. On the other hand, the rubber feet were hard as rock and did not keep the machine in place when typing, just crying to be replaced with fresh new ones.

Unlike later year models of the QDL, this 1947-vintage does not have a proper paper holder to prevent the sheet from hanging down and rubbing on the table surface behind the machine when typing at the end of page. While the left margin is set with a convenient "MAGIC" lever, the right margin must be set by flipping the paper table back and pressing down on a button before moving the margin stop. Six tabulation stops can be set from the back.

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.

Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.

Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.
