Description:
I bought this machine off eBay as a challenge to hone my repair skills. It is in both better and worse shape than I imagined. The drawband is functional, and so are most of the keys. Everything seems to be present. The back plate has cosmetic damage. It is dirty as heck, but I expected that. What I did not expect is the 3 bent typebars and 2 disconnected ones. Still, I wanted a challenge. I think I can fix it. Everybody deserves a chance!
Update: I straightened the rods for the 6 and 8 keys and reattached them. I straighted a small connector for the @ key and the typebar sits closer to its fellows but is still above them. They all function, though. The Back Space lever gets stuck in the down position and the main spring needs more tension. We are on our way!

I lucked into a 1938 Remington Rand 5 at a thrift store a while back and the rest is history! Typewriter fever has led me to the Typosphere, where I am working to further my knowledge of these fabulous machines. (My husband calls it "Typewriter Porn".) Remingtons are still my brand of choice!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Silent on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Silent By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
