Nickname: "Lucy"
Purchased just outside of Syracuse, New York about 60 miles away from where it would have been manufactured in Groton, New York. I paid $5 for it as the previous owner had bought it at an estate sale and used it as a prop for her wedding reception. When I bought it, the A and W keys were not working, the linkages disconnected. Once fixed up, Lucy types like a dream. You can clearly see the bones in this 4-Series that would evolve into the venerable 5-Series. The serial number tells us that Lucy was among the first 8,000 portable typewriters manufactured after Smith-Corona resumed production after WWII. Lucy has a great, chunky action that feels like you are banging out a story for tomorrow's morning edition. Lucy represents the dawn of Smith-Corona's golden age of medium portable typewriters.
